At approximately 5:30 PM on Thursday September 20th, Putnam firefighters were alerted to a structure fire located at 237 School Street. As Putnam jakes arrived on scene, they found fire leaping up the “D” side of the building and a neighbor trying to control the rapid spread of flame with a garden hose. The neighbor was successful in slowing the advance of the fire as firefighters quickly deployed a handline to finish it off, as it was eating up copious amounts of vinyl siding. Putnam firefighters entered the dwelling to check for extension into the interior of the home while other jakes laddered the building and began stripping burnt siding from the exterior wall. Soon, bare scorched wood could be seen from the street. Crews on the interior overhauled the interior of the affected room and gave a final wash down of the area to prevent a rekindle. The quick thinking of a neighbor and the effective operations of the Putnam FD narrowly averted a major disaster. The cause of the fire is under investigation but did not appear suspicious according to Putnam fire officials. The fire appears to have started in the area of two outside central air units. No injuries were reported. |
