Just before 7 PM on Friday June 16th, Oxford firefighters received a call to investigate "smoke in the building" at 710 Main Street. On duty firefighters were tied up at the time, operating at a multiple vehicle traffic accident on Depot Road, so Oxford Fire Alarm summonsed a mutual aid Engine from the neighboring Auburn Fire Department. When the Auburn Engine arrived on scene, they quickly realized that they had a working fire in the structure. They requested additional help, and Fire Alarm initiated a working fire signal as well as striking a second alarm. This brought help to the scene from the Leicester, Dudley, Charlton, Webster and Sutton fire departments. The fire quickly ran the roof ridge and followed ventilation ducts, finally finding their way to the night skies. Rain was falling heavily during the firefight, and firefighters were held at bay outside the building because of the structural integrity of the roof. Eventually, three aerial master streams were set up, and firefighters were able to get a handle on the fast moving fire. A third alarm was struck early in the fire which brought the Southbridge, Millbury, and Douglas Fire Departments to the scene to assist. The Northbridge FD covered the Oxford Fire Headquarters. One firefighter was treated for exhaustion, but no other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not been determined at the present time. Note: The last two photos were taken by fellow fire photographer Scott LaPrade. |
