In the early morning hours of Thursday February 1st, Dudley firefighters were awakened to respond to a reported building fire in a multiple family dwelling located at 12 Schofield Avenue. People were reported to still be in the building. Dudley Police officers arrived first and found heavy fire consuming the rear porches of a 3 story woodframe dwelling at the address. Officers ran through the building to check if all occupants had evacuated the structure, then went to the adjoining structures to alert those residents of the threat. First due Dudley firefighters struck a 2nd alarm enroute, on the reports they were receiving from police and other public safety personnel. Firefighters arrived to find a well-developed fire, heavy fire showing from the rear of the building with obvious extension into the attic space. Dudley E-2 and Ladder 1 were first to arrive on scene, and both crews were kept very busy stretching one Blitz gun and a handline to the rear of the building, securing a supply line for Engine 2, and getting the roof vertically vented. After these tasks were accomplished, crews began an interior attack from the front of the dwelling using the interior staircase. Mutual aid was needed to bolster the Dudley firefighters, who quickly gained the upper hand on the fast moving fire. Mutual aid crews assisting at the scene responded from the Towns of Webster, Oxford, and Southbridge, as well as a ladder company from the Quinebaug (CT) VFD. No injuries were reported, and eleven cats were wrangled up by firefighters and passed back to their rightful owners. The cause of the fire is undetermined at the present time, and is under investigation by the Dudley Fire Department and the State Fire Marshals Office. |
