At approximately 16:45 hrs. on Wednesday April 27th, Charlton firefighters were alerted to a confirmed structure fire on Dresser Hill Road (Rt. 31). The fire, which was discovered by a passer-by, was located in a one-story addition that was attached to a very large and historic two-story farmhouse at the corner of Dresser Hill Road and 6 Schoolhouse Road. The occupant of the house, who was at home at the time of the fire, was alerted to the fire by the passer-by and was able to flee his home without incident. First due Charlton firefighters arrived to find a heavy, wind driven fire condition consuming the one story attached shed. The fire was severely threatening the farmhouse. Lines were stretched and entry was made through an entry door between the two structures, and hose crews effectively cut off the fire before it could spread to the dwelling. The initial response included several Engine/Tankers, as the location of the fire was outside Charlton Fire’s hydrant district. Eventually, 3 alarms were struck to provide adequate resources to battle the blaze. Charlton firefighters received assistance on the scene from members of the Dudley, Southbridge, Webster, Spencer, and Sturbridge Fire Departments. The Leicester FD covered the empty Charlton firehouse. |
