Today i rode my bike to portland from Chickasaw park at 45th and s.w. parkway. the chickasaw neighborhood is a westover award winning neighborhood..enjoy..and see..it's not a slum..Chickasaw park is 61 acres; and right up the street from that you will find Shawnee park which is is 166 acres. According to the courierjournal "Chickasaw is a beautiful park with the distinction of being the only city park black people could use until Mayor Andrew Broadus ordered all parks, swimming pools and amphitheaters to admit all races in 1955. Chickasaw was established in 1922 on the estate of John "Boss" a Democratic power broker." This area of the west end is also home to Plato Terrace, which according to the Courierjournal "is named for Samuel Plato, a black architect who Louisville historian Walter Hutchins says designed and built many of the houses in the chickasaw area. Plato learned architecture and carpentry through a correspondence school, and ultimately developed his expertise enough to land the contracts for 40 or more U.S. post offices around the country. He also designed the Classical Revival"

Many powerfull black's live in this neighborhood including; Kentucky Senator Gerald Neal, the first black female Supreme Court Judge in the state of kentucky Denise Clayton, and alderwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton, and many other black entrepreneurs.
