Isn't this so true. Made me laugh.

........... SCREWING UP A GOOD THING WHEN YOU HAVE IT.

Gentleman, we tried our best.

I'll call it. 14:56.03.sec time of death.

I will speak with the family.....

[]

Panasonic has confused me before; however this time it's to bizarre.
Unlike the HVX200 that was an under powered Honda civic trying to be a
Mercedes-Benz SLR. The GH1 is a product with all the right parts to only
be crippled by a horrible implementation of the main video codec system.

Good work Panasonic; you sure know how to flat line a new born.......

........... THE CANON 5DMII GETS MANUAL CONTROL FIRMWARE UPDATE

It seems Welles is happy too! Well he's clapping anyhow!
[]

About time. Next, 24fps. That said; it's a very good start for canon.

-Michael Pappas

........... THE GRASS IS ALWAYS BIGGER ON THE OTHER SIDE

While the cropped issue is a matter of perspective. I hear
a lot of neophytes complain or exclaim their absolute
need not to be cropped, however most of them never have
shot on anything larger than 1/3, 2/3 or maybe S16mm
image area. Funny how most Entertainment has been shot on
S35mm film negative ratios with no issues, however the wannabes or
neophytes now say, they can't work on anything less than 36x24mm sensors
since that implementation on the 5DMII. It's actually silly; well really silly.
I had in my hands since I was 5yrs old 120 format cameras ; so I must feel
really cropped. I find the whole subject absurd; and I want FF sensors,
however I also know that if there was only going to be APS-C approx. size
sensors, I would have zero complaints...

If your coming from, lets say:

1/3: Well that's cropped compared to
1/2: Now that's cropped compared to
2/3: And that's cropped when compared to
16mm: Which is cropped when compared to
S16mm: Cropped yet again when compared to
3perf 35mm: which is getting yet again cropped compared to
35mm AA : Which is fine, however small compared to
65mm 2:20:1 : Which is all in good, however compared to
IMAX full frame : Which is gigantic, maybe, however looking small, when compared to
8x10 large format.

You get my point!

No mater how you slice it ( crop it in this case ),your
almost always smaller than something else. :-)

...........THE 35MM F1.9 ANAMORPHIC TESTING.

Ok, so speed is the game. I recieved a 35mm f1.9 today. Another
70's lens. This one is a fast lens. Of course not a Kubrick 0.9, however
F1.9 plenty good. I ran a few tests, and for anamorphic at F1.9
I can't complain; astigmatism is there, however minor.
Sweet bokeh looks smooth as silk. Can't wait
for real world testing. I need to fabricate a sliding bracket
mechanism to alleviate weight load, however it will suffice for now.

-Michael Pappas

...........NEW LENS ARRIVED & CONTINUED ANAMORPHIC TESTS.

..[]
[]
[]
Received a mint mid 70's 35mm f2.8 today from the east coast.
I ran a few Anamorphic tests in daylight and at night.
Shot these wide open to see worst case performance.
Interesting, and nice was the unique rainbow flare I got on the
daytime shot. Second shot was night time with a focus range
down to the inches. Makes you feel sorry for the AC's doing
focus pulling in these ranges. I would like to try a faster
lens, something in the range of 1.2 to 1.4. However, in anamorphic
that's suicide DOF focus ranges, not to mention the anamorphic
astigmatism etc wide open. Yes, T.4 is ideal for lens performance,
however I like using practicals to light. The FOV on this setup
is very sweet. I'm Looking forward to further testing.

-Michael Pappas

........... IF IT DOESN'T WORK, MAKE IT WORK!

[]
Got hold of a lens from the 70's that optically is good, and unfortunately do
to it's optical flange, incompatible with the camera system. Well, I didn't like that.
So I rebuilt that damn thing, and made it compatible. The shallow focus
with the 35mm f2.8 anamorphic shot lends itself to a very nice feel.
The shot above was the first frame from this test. Now it's time to lock the
design down and bring the tolerances to a tighter specification.

-Michael Pappas

........... ANAMORPHIC TESTING CONTINUED!

[]

- Michael Papppas

......... LATE IN THE MORNING ANAMORPHIC BRAIN MELTING TESTS!

[]

Running stress tests to see the limitations. Anamorphic can be
quite tricky. Compared to cropping it's a pain in the ass at times
That said, if you can tag the look, it's worth it.

-Michael Pappas

...........LENS FOV COMPARISON OF 28MM AND 20MM SHOT ANAMORPHIC

Testing a 20mm with the Anamorphic lens system. I'm waiting for a
$4 part to arrive from Texas so I can mount this 20mm correcty. It's a 3.8f-stop
lens which is kinda slow in todays standard. However it's an experiment
that has proven in preliminary results to deliver a very epic look.
Previous anamorphic test shots were 28mm F2.8 lens.

[]

-Michael Pappas

............. MORE ANAMORPHIC WIDE-SCREEN TEST SHOTS.

Shot with more of a warm tone. The previous tests were done to
have the " matrix " greenish hue. Just basic testing here.
NOTE: I'm uploading pics as I process them from anamorphic
squeezed format: 11:22pm today pacific time.
[]

-Michael Pappas

............FIRST DAY AT ANAMORPHIC WIDE SCREEN TESTING.

I did some basic testing today on a High Definition
camera mounted anamorphic system.
Shot in Newport and surrounding cities []
Results were in the middle. This has more to do with
the Hi-Def camera not able to take advantage at capturing
the unique qualities offered by shooting anamorphic
optically. I'm so over basic High Definition cameras.
They are just not good at dynamic range/latitude and
are very limited at pixel density etc. Systems like Red,
Dalsa, Arri D20/21 and the likes have so much to offer,
and once you shoot in this spectrum of quality it's
hard to go back. Today's test were just a sample run,
so it wasn't expected to be much more than marginal.

- Michael Pappas

...........ANAMORPHIC LENS ARRIVES!

An anamorphic lens arrived from Sydney Australia
today. This anamorphic I have wanted to try out for years.
I love super w i d e - s c r e e n composition cinematography
and photography. [] Of course
anamorphic lenses and adapters have their own unique look.
It's not about perfect sharpness, it's about attaining a certain look
and feel. Spherical lenses will always have an edge to edge resolution
and image correctness lead over anamorphic, however it's the look of
what your trying to attain that's the most important goal. I've done
some tests as soon as it arrived, and I like the preliminary results
a lot. One thing I notice that is contrary to other reports;
there is no significant light transmission loss. I ran a light
meter through as well and with or with out lens, my f-stops and
aperture are constant. Very good news.. I will start more
extensive testing during the next few weeks.

-Michael Pappas

...........2009 IS THE YEAR THIS FINALLY STARTS TO COME TRUE!

[]
__I've disliked 35mm adapters and all the nonsense associated with them. It will be nice to
see these way overpriced tubes be put to rest. This is a year for transitions
for a few technologies. DSLR cinema is a leap I hoped for since 2002; so
it's a very ethusiastic time for I and many others that see the potential for
these new cinematography production tools.

-Michael Pappas

..........RUMORS OF NIKON'S D400 ARE BECOMING MORE REALISTIC.

Yes we all have heard the rumors since last year of a pending Nikon D400
with Movie capture at up to 1080p 24 fps with stereo sound and a 16 million +
mega pixel CMOS to be announced at PMA or even sooner. Lets hope Nikon can
improve on the D90 with global shutter and more. If so this could be quite a
camera in the $2000.00 dollar range. It has rumored to have been spotted at
the 2009 Obama Inaugural being beta tested with all labels covered in black tape.
As well I suspect it's 50/50 chance that Canon responds at PMA. There is talk of a
60D or Rebel upgrade. Unknown at this time. If so, they will have HD/Live View too.

......... CANON'S "PROFESSIONAL" PHOTOGRAPHY DIVISION INSULTS IT'S LOYAL USERS....

Many professional that have adopted the new Canon 5D Mark II into their arsenal
have had the unfortunate experience with the HD-1080P modes inability to do
true manual control. There would be no room for complaint if it wasn't for the fact that
Canon them selves has promoted it otherwise in marketing adds, videos and placed
in the hand of pre-selected professionals to show off their new camera.

Here is a quote from Canon's own white paper on the 5D Mark II......

Canon's white paper quote:
""The 1080p HDvideo recording mode represents a paradigm shift for still photographers
and videographers alike, and promises to open new creative doors and commercial opportunities
for advanced, professional, and fine art photographers. With it activated, photographers and
video-graphers can capture high definition video with depth-of-field control found only in professional
video modelsusing much more affordable Canon EF lenses including fisheye, ultra-wide,and image stabilized lenses.""

Well.... I could swear I read the word professional and commercial. Hmmmm. Lets read that specific line again.

{ commercial opportunities for advanced, professional }

Yep! There it is, the words " professional & commercial ".......

I thought I was seeing things..... Come on Canon, you can do better than that, I hope!

Canon wants to play both sides depending on how there confronted on this issue with
the Mark II's lack of manual control. They'll call it a consumer product in one breath if
confronted about the lack of manual control. On the flip side, they go to great lengths
to make sure the camera is placed in professional circles, and used as such.
As well promoting it in their own documents as " professional ".

Canon knows better to pull this. Reminds of that Canon marketing
phrase ( Canon Know How ). What happen? Have they lost their "know how"?
There is no excuse for this deliberate deletion of control from the
5D MARK II in the HD 1080P mode.

Oh yeah, one more thing. What makes this funny in the end, is to see professionals
use Canons number one competitors ( Nikon ) manual lenses on their latest flagship
camera the 5d Mark II for at least aperture control.

-Michael Pappas

............. TESTING OUT THE CANON 5D MARK II HD-1080P MODE.

This is a photo of me projected on a 13 foot screen from footage captured from testing
the Canon 5D Mark II. This picture doesn't do justice to the quality of the camera. The
footage is quite amazing looking considering the impromptu condition it was captured.

PS: The 5D MII is insane good. It's almost wrong........

-Michael Pappas

............. THE WAY OF THE FUTURE.

In Scorsese 's Aviator; as the film ends Howard Hughes played by DiCaprio mutters
"the way of the future... the way of the future" ... I can't help not muttering that myself
about DSLR-Cinema. If not the exact future, then it's a glimpse of an amazing road ahead.
For years ever since getting the D60, 10D & Fuji DSLR, I wished that option had been reality.
Now my day dreaming of digital cinema ecstasy is starting to hit. When I first got the press
release it felt like an hallucination. Just when I think it's over, then RED counters and takes it to warp
speed on steroids with it's mega super wide camera's that I have always felt was a great
photographic medium. Now it's moving pictures. WoW! One thing is for sure, I can't say
what's next. So I'll just sit back and enjoy this new digital hallucinogenic trip, that's reality this time........

.................THE 3K SCARLET D-CINEMA CAMERA GOT ME THINKING.

Just fun food for thought and obviously this is speculation of course, however
this is going to be reality sooner than later. 2009 is just a little over 8 months off.

With what's known so far about Reds Scarlet 2/3 cmos 3k camera; how are
the current adapters going to perform with it? Just like people put adapters
on other 2/3 pro cameras to gain that " look " , there are going to be people
doing the same with Scarlet. Red code at 3k should be quite clean and very
sensitive to imperfect focus screens etc. How will they hold up?

Will current adapter designers need to seek out better focus screen
designs & technology?

What would be great is Red developing a 35mm adapter; with their
know how and capital they would for sure make one kick a*# unit.

.................BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD; 35MM ADAPTER TESTING DELAYED AGAIN......

So after exhausting research on 35mm-Adapters; nothing good to report.
The plan was to start by spring or earlier summer. So far I am not fully pleased
on my current research. There is possibly hope on one product. However I
will remain tight lipped until I can do more in-depth research on this.

Hopefully when a decision is made this testing will be in-conjunction
with the anamorphic tests that were delayed for 6 months. I can't wait
to hook up the Nikon lenses as well. There is a line of Nikon cinema
modified lenses that look very promising. Lots to come in the next few months.

While on the film set Sunday I noticed someone had an ipod. Yes the new
ipod Touch that is an iphone without the phone. The "touch" is even thinner and
lighter too! Unfortunately there are ipod Touch LCD issues starting to surface on
the internet. So I was going to get one of these since I liked the wifi internet of
the iphone. Not now, it seems that Apple rushed this one out to quickly and
users are reporting black issues with video. Ahhhh, i'll wait thank you. Let Apple
figure it out, and then get it. That aside, it's awesome, and internet like
this is what I have wanted for a long time.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
................... Ok, this is a first for me; I usually don't promote films on my site. However tonight I
saw the Film Sicko by director Michael Moore. Wow, what an amazing documentary it is.
I think every American should see this film. No, let me refraise that; EVERY American must
see this film! I'm not new to the " ill's " of the American profit medical industry engine that
it is, however it was shocking to see it on the big screen in the manner Michael Moore displayed it.
I was raised in a news savvy household, so I have been hearing and seeing reports like this for
some time. However seeing our medical system juxtaposed against other countries systems
just rubbed it in the " wound " much harder. It made me very sad of how we treat the week, the sick
and anyone in need of medical care in this country. Michael Moore did a great job on this film
and he deserves to be recognized for his work. I have list of links below that will take you to
the films main web-page and Moviefone film reviews, including playing times so you can get
your butt to the theater to see this film. Take a friend. No, take ten friends and have them
take ten of their friends. The more people that see it, the more we " hopefully "; and I stress
hope really hard we can turn our sick pathetic health care system around for the better
in the the United States Of America.

..............I have been considering Anamorphic lens testing on the HV20 and Canon A1
lately. Yeah I know that their both using 16x9 chips, however couple the two together

you get a 2:35:1 scope image squeezed onto those 16x9 chips. When I get that

....... Here is a thread of an analysis I did of the 6 camera shootout done up in
Hollywood back in January. I had placed this piece of research aside and forgot
about it. All the camera heads from the F900, Varicam, HVX200, XLH1 and HD100
were straight to G5's via aja card. So this is a core camera head test. Well clearly
the F900 whoops ass, however it's also $100,000+ too! Varicam does well for 2/3
the price and all others are damn good performers. Though all these cameras can
shoot films for the big screen and not be an issue, this just shows you which one is
on top. That said, Viper, Dalsa, Arri D20 and Panavisions Geniuses not involved in
this test, creams them all! However those cost insane amounts of money and Geniuses
is a rental only too!

......NEWS 220: BASIC BLOW-UP RESOLUTION TESTS ON HVX200 FRAME- 720P vs 1080P/24

I was doing some testing for evaluation on the HVX200; here is one of the blow up frames
that was an analysis on 720p vs 1080p taken from material Kaku posted.
I wanted to see if there was an increase in resolving power when going to 1080p mode.

......NEWS 219: CANON XLH1 VS SONY FX1/Z1U....

A comparison between the H1 and Z1u tells a lot about The XLH1's resolution!
If the Z1u is about 650 lines, than with the results of this blow up of the
H1 vs Z1u, the H1 is clearly way above 800 lines easily.

The difference between these both shots is far more than just simply 150 lines...

......NEWS 218: MORE GRADED TEST FOOTAGE FROM XLH1

This is a simple scratch pad graded clip that I did from my friend
Barlow Eltons footage filmed in Utah. I went for a very dramatic warm
contrasty tone, but at the same time tried to hold the blue white tones
of the snow. There is a lot of room to work with in footage from the
XLH1- This is a 1280x720 down convert to .h264. The
original full frame has even more resolution. Below is a a jpeg of a
comparison from of the original and the graded version as well the.

.....NEWS 0215: PHOTOS OF HVX200 & XLH1 FOOTAGE DISPLAYED A $6,500 DOLLAR PIONEER PRO-1130HD 50" PLASMA.

I went to dinner at my good friends home of Bob Jones and his wife Barbara here in town. Bob Jones is the owner and creator of the SkyCrane.com that builds camera cranes for filmmaking and video production applications. His wife is an artist and photographer as well. Here are photos of footage displayed on their new $6,500 dollar Pioneer PRO-1130HD 50" Plasma monitor. There are HVX200 shots and a XLH1 as well. The HVX200 looked awesome. It had an amazing look that was very rich and dynamic looking. It felt very very film like. This clip has a lot of discussions related to it containing lots of noise. Well, at this viewing it was not an issue. I like this clip the first time I saw it and thought the noise issue was way over blown. It's awesome looking in my opinion. The Helicopter shot had noise; however I have read that it was at full gain. This footage looked good in my opinion; and I felt as I did with the singer clip that it was very rich in color and dynamic. The rack focus on the tree leaves are tack sharp too in this shot. The noise sure gave it that nice kinda grainy look that high speed film has. Seriously, it had a cool look that if you wanted to add noise to emulate a grittier grainy look; the HVX200 can do it very well gained up. I wish I had brought the bamboo footage, because it too looks nice on the PC/Mac systems. All and all everything was looking great on this screen. I also brought some very inclusive footage from a film being shot with the JVC HD100 and this HD camera footage looked very film like. The 24P is awesome on the HD100. I feel that JVC gets a bad wrap in my opinion in regards to the HD100. In the pics I shot some close ups of the screen to show you how much detail comes up and also full screen photos. Enjoy.....

.....NEWS 0214: THE HVX200 HAS A FIRMWARE UPDRADE OPTION VIA THE SD CARD.

I created a survey at DVinfo.net, DVXuser.com & CreativeCow.com asking film industry colleagues would they feel more comfortable purchasing the Panasonic HVX200 today if they new they could get firmware upgrades to fix possible issues if needed, as well possible feature upgrades. It was brought to my attention on page 125 of the manual that Panasonic has set this exact system up via the SD card terminal. Very good news. Kudos to Panasonic for doing this and I believe the first one to offer this on professional small form High Definition cameras.

.....NEWS 0212: RECENT FRAMES FROM FILMING I DID IN HOLLYWOOD AT BRINS & SAWYER.

Here are frames from footage using the Canon XLH1 Digital Cinema High Definition camera I filmed in Hollywood at Birns & Sawyer during December 2005. This was all natural lighting and practicals only. Half the time I was forced to film with the people on the dark side of the moon as I like to call it. The sun was facing me into the lens and in return I was filming the shadow side, forcing me to blow out the backgrounds to bring up exposures. As you can see with a little control the blowouts look quite good. The XL H1 handles highlights very well contrary to what some people say. There's also frames taken once the sun was gone, and the XLH1 handles this very well in low key light levels. This camera can give you whatever image/look/style you want it to achieve. You just need to set it up right. The material was filmed in 24f and it was quite hard to find blur free images since any slight motion at 1/48th a second shutter is rendered blurry. I managed to get some though. I have done " No" grading to these; only resizing to 1280x720 for bandwidth issues. So these frames have more res then is displayed as well. These frames were captured via the cameras built in SD card option straight from the original HDV tape. The original raw .m2t files are better than these jpegs taken from the built in camera capture function; so yes it actually gets better than this. I watched a good majority of this material in Birns & Sawyers large screen projection High Def theater; and it was smooth and clean. There are more frames to come, so enjoy these for now.

It's best to open these in quicktime and then play as full screen in loop mode. Or you can pipe them off to a HD monitor..

.....NEWS 0208: FINALLY GOT OUR RAW HVX200 CLIPS. NOW WE NEED A SERVER FOR HOSTING!

Finally got around to getting our HVX200 clips shot on P2. I have 4 raw clips that my friend Barlow and I shot with Panasonic's HVX200 at DVexpo last week. What I have are three 720P 24 and one 1080P 24 raw clips.** We shot these on a 4gig p2 card and then brought them from a powerbook laptop via the PCMCIA slot into Final Cut Pro and then burned them to CD.

BTW- Import to FCP was so easy that it was awesome. I have no problem with tape, but the P2 worked flawlessly with FCP. Thumbs Up!

The Footage is nothing fancy at all. It's convention show floor footage on sticks with pretty bland lighting you get at any show. It's more like If I were shooting a documentary ( ala Michael Moore- frontline etc ) or run & gun film like BlairWitch etc; that's what these show conditions would resemble simply non controlled environments that we would face for that type of filmmaking or cinema verite style. Stay tune!

.....NEWS 0204: Birns & Sawyer in Hollywood shows off new facility and new HD gear to filmmakers.......

Just got home from a long and good day at Birns & Sawyer in Hollywood . Met a whole bunch of wonderful people at
B & S. I will put up more photos as soon as there is more time. Here are a few taken today. You can see I have a fully rigged out XLH1 on my shoulder. It had excelent weight balance too.The Canon XLH1 performed outstanding! I have shot some very good footage and we projected it in their HD theater. The XLH1 HDV footage was " Amazing looking...." I can't say the same for the HVX200. The artifacts were to much. Something is not right. I am resevering judgement until I see footage from an actual shipping camera. I did film with it for some time. More to come.....

.....NEWS 0202: THE HVX200 DEBUT.............

I am putting together my thoughts on the HVX200. It's an amazing camera. It's also making my life miserable in deciding which to buy now. The XLH1 vs the HVX200. Removalble optics is beautiful. The HVX200 fixed lens is beuatiful and very wide too! The latitude on the HVX200 and how it handles hightlights from what I see is better than the XLH1. The XLH1 has overall more res from what I can tell from footage. The tone of the image from the HVX200 is so very film like that it is awesome. The only problem is the footage was on a small LCD monitor. I belive a 17". Why not a bigger one like Canon's 1000 line Sony CRT. I need to see more tests. Birns this weekend is having demos...Now all the hard research is about to begin. Kudos to both Canon and Panasonic. You both created very good HD cameras no matter what. Stay tune as I try to collect my thoughts over the past week and try to digest tons of clips and data. Saturday I go to B&S in Hollywood for an all day project on these HD cams. By the way it was so great to see all the new faces and put faces to names from DVXuser and DVinfo. Had a great time guys and girls... : - )

PS:I Loved the UCLA CheerLeader HD footage shot with the HVX200 ...MMMMMM Thanks Jarred and I believe Evin also shot that as well. You guys are Outstanding!

.....NEWS 0201: THIS IS A SMALL LIVE REPORT FROM THE FLOOR OF DVEXPO:

The Canon XLH1 is an amazing camera..... I must say that the XLH1 is a mini Cinealta. It was so nice to see friends from canon Joe Bogacz, Mike Zorich and Tim Smith. I have a lot of respect for Canon and how they run their business. The XLH1 is far and above the best HD camera under 10k in all around offerings. The clock maker footage was excellent. It didn't stop there. The Italy footage that was shot in 1080i 60 was beautiful. It was filmed in HDV and was mouth watering. What's funny is, the HDV Codec works the least best with interlace video. In progressive video HDV shines; yet the italy footage looked amazing and it being shot in interlace mode not progressive. I now know how well the H1 will do in HDV 24F progressive mode. Wow! Kudos to Canon for an excellent tool that is top notch..... Planning next to see the HVX200 and try it out. This event is turning out to be a very good one indeed.............

As of 2/27/2005
Can't say much now, but Panasonic is about to rock the HD cinematography technology house.
I hope my good friends at Canon Digital Video development are going to announce something any day. When Canon does
watch out, the XL2 for a low resolution camera is very good. I can imagine how their HD is going to be.. Larry Thorpe, former Sony broadcast is now at Cannon. That's very good for Canon development. NAB in Las Vegas begins April 18th 2005, that's going to be a ground breaking show. More to come

***12 / 10 / 2004***
DV Expo West started this week. Since the last show back in July in NewYork, Sony has released the $4,000 HDR FX1 and Z1U hi-def camera. This kind of image quality at this level was in the $50,000+ starting range before the release of low cost HDcams. I know normally there would be mounds of data, but to many projects are going on at once. Sony of-course did not put on a 24p mode, what are they thinking. Bad marketing move on their part. The Z1 version from the broadcast devision does not have 24p either. More to come...........

New HD material at PappasArts sub site: http://www.pbase.com/PappasArtshd

2004
DV Expo-east started and Canon announced the XL2. No HDV on the XL2 though. Very sad
I am a long time Canon supporter and believe they are an excellent Camera manufacturer. I was hoping for HD to be on the XL2, but to be honest my instincts told me it was just a bit to early for Canon. They usually are the last to dive in. But there is hope, Canon's Mike Zorich did allude to a HD camera soon. This time next year Canon will have some HD system out, I'm sure of that. For now it's in JVC, Panasonic and Sony's hands. Who will be the first to come out with a HD camcorder? Yes it's true that JVC does have the HD10u out, but for film production, it's a bit short on the control side. So we wait for the next big cam to come. Sony's unnamed HDV camera announced back in march has promises, but there is no release date. I hope Sony's HDV cam does what the VX1000 did 8 years ago for SD video.

Here is an HD camera system that the military and Nasa are looking at. This system can
be used for Studio film production as well visual effects work.
