Below is how the owner describes the car.

Porsche's 914/6 variant came with a carbureted 110 hp 2.0 L flat-6 engine, taken from the 1969 911T. Karmann manufactured the rolling chassis at their own plant, then either sent them to Porsche for fitment of the Porsche suspension and flat-six engine or kept them in house for Volkswagen hardware. 914/6 models used a similar suspension and brakes to the 911, giving the car handling and braking superiority over the 4-cylinder Volkswagen models in addition to higher power output. A Volkswagen-Porsche joint venture, Volkswagen of America, handled export of the Porsche 914 to the U.S., where both versions were badged and sold as Porsches. In Europe, the four-cylinder cars were sold as Volkswagen-Porsches, at Volkswagen dealerships. This "tainted" the car in the opinion of many automotive critics of that era, and a little of that attitude persists to this day. Slow sales and rising costs prompted Porsche to discontinue the 914/6 variant in 1972 after producing only 3,351 of them.

Up for auction is this rare 1971 Porsche 914-6 in the attractive and specially optioned color of Gold Metallic. Total number of owners is thought to be two or three. Having been always garaged by it's last owner of 20 years, this 914-6 has a solid and straight body with no serious rust. Overall it is in excellent driver condition and is perfect for the buyer who is looking for an original 914-6 they can drive now and restore further over time. Or to just keep it as is and enjoy it for many years as an excellent driver. Being a 1971 914-6, this example is very rare with only 432 produced that year. This is a US model 914-6, though some components, such as the turn signal lenses, have been replaced with the Euro specific versions.

BODY, TRIM and PAINT

Body is in excellent condition having been well cared for by it's last owner of over 20 years. Having been always garaged, the body and underside is free of serious rust in any of the usual areas (battery area, floors, rockers, wheel wells, suspension pan, etc.). Just some very minor surface rust at the very rear edge of the rear trunk. The body is straight and free of the usual door dings and dents and doesn't show evidence of prior accident repairs. The floors still show the original undercoating. Front trunk lid, engine lid and both doors shut fine with great gaps. Rear trunk lid spring mechanism is dislodged at the left side hinge, so rear trunk lid is just slightly out of alignment and is not latching, due to this misalignment. The spring mechanism will be repaired and lid will be aligned, prior to delivery to the winning bidder. The majority of chrome and aluminum trim is in very good original condition. Front bumper is straight with excellent chrome. Rear bumper has a couple of dents in the sides of the license plate area, but an additional straight rear chrome bumper is included with the extra parts. All glass is original and in excellent condition, with a clear windshield and clear original side and rear glass windows. Rubber bumper pads and weather stripping is in excellent condition. Front and rear light lenses show no cracks. Targa top is in excellent condition with excellent fit.

A repaint in the original color of Gold Metallic (color code 88) was completed approximately 10 years ago. The rear panel and inner sections of the sail panels is painted black. According to the previous owner, they were painted black prior to the last repaint. So it was very likely as ordered from the factory, as it was very common for Porsche to sell cars with custom paintwork back in the early '70's. The paint finish has excellent shine and only a few very small chips. There are also a couple of small bubbles at the bottom of the passenger door. Overall, the paint is in excellent condition for a driver. Gold Metallic was a rare special option color offered for only the 1971 and 1972 914-6 and is definitely an early 70's period color. It's quite the eye catcher and contrasts very well with the various chrome and black parts on the car. Numerous compliments on the color were received by pedestrians, while the following photos were taken.

The interior appears to be entirely original and is in excellent condition. There are also no visible rips or worn areas in the dash face, seats, rear pad, door panels, carpet, Targa top headliner or leather wrapped steering wheel. The original dash is in excellent condition with only a couple of very small cracks, which are not in a noticeable area. Gauges, switches and knobs are all present. The original steering wheel is installed and is leather wrapped, with no rips in the leather or stitching. The original passenger seatbelt is installed. The prior owner removed the driver side seatbelt with plans to replace it with a racing style belt, but the original seatbelt is included with the extra parts. Rarely seen is the original passenger side footrest complete with it's original tether. Center armrest is present and is in excellent condition.

Left headlight, tail lights, brake lights, hazard light switch, turn signals, wipers, horn, radio, interior light and gauge lights are functional. The right headlight lights up, but is not popping up when the light switch is activated. It will be repaired prior to the end of the auction. The fresh air blower is not functional. The starter is brand new and the charging system is fully functional. Speedometer, tachometer, fuel, oil temp, clock and oil pressure gauges are functional and all warning lights are working. Battery is in excellent condition.

Suspension is firm, but comfortable, with Bilstein Racing shocks in front and Bilstein Rally shocks in the rear with 140# springs. Front and rear sway bars are installed. The forged Fuchs alloys are in good condition with no serious curb scrapes or scratches. BF Goodrich Radial T/A 205/65HR15 tires are mounted and have plenty of tread, with no uneven wear patterns observed. Brakes are functioning fine with no leaks and the car stops straight when brakes are applied at speed. Cross drilled rotors and steel braided brake hoses are installed at each wheel.

The original 2.0L engine was replaced approximately 20 years ago with a fully rebuilt 1972 911T 2.4L engine (number 6121460). Exact mileage on the engine is unknown, but prior owner stated he has placed only 5,000km (3,125 miles) on the engine over the last 20 years with documentation. Engine starts easily and has excellent power. The acceleration with this engine installed is pretty amazing.

Specifics on what was done during the engine rebuild are as follows:

'72 911T 2.4L engine with '75 911S pistons and cylinders w/ valve reliefs cut in pistons, 8.2 Comp Ratio, 901 Cams, Timing 4.2 - 4.6mm, Ports Polished, 40mm Webers with 34mm venturis, oil fed cam chain tensioners installed.

A compression test was completed on 10/3/07 and the following readings were obtained:

Cyl#1 - 150psi, Cyl#2 - 150psi, Cyl#3 - 150psi, Cyl#4 - 140psi, Cyl#5 - 140psi, Cyl#6 - 140psi

The 5 speed transmission was fully rebuilt within the last 2000 miles and shifts fine into all five gears. There is none of the usual synchro grinding in 1st or 2nd gears. The clutch was replaced within the last 2000 miles and feels fine with no slippage.

Extra parts include additional straight rear chrome bumper, pair of heavy duty torsion bars, extra pair of front A arms, original driver side seatbelt, two original wrenches from toolkit, extra oil tank, extra pair of wiper blades and extra clutch and pressure plate.

Documentation includes original owner's manual and repair history back to 1988.
