Sales History Factory 914-6

...Many of you have contacted me asking for my opinion of what a fair price would be to pay for a factory 914-6 in "good" condition. Since 'condition' is a very subjective term and leaves a lot to interpretation, I felt that creating a database reference showing condition, options and sold price would benefit us all.

As we already know, the few factory mid-engine 1970 and 1971 Porsche 914-6 cars that were ever built, are now approaching the 43-year mark as it continues to enjoy an increasing global interest and demand. Prices continue an upper trend by inching up over time. Imagine, today you can buy many very nice luxury cars with what you will now have to pay for a properly restored original 914-6 factory built car.

The 1970-71 Porsche 914-6 cars shown in these photo galleries will now provide us with some indication of the varying condition, care given, factory originality/features as well as aftermarket modifications, not to mention what we, as the buying public, are willing to pay for these fantastic little mid-engine cars.

Considering the current cost to do a full rotisserie restoration, the cars and prices listed are bargains. I just completed a 1600 hour professional Concour restoration of a 22,000 mile original six. Add to those hours over $40K in parts, including full engine and transmission disassemble and restore, mainly to reseal and refresh. It's no wonder these extremely high caliber restored cars have asking prices over $100K and higher. Someday soon, that price will seem like a bargain. . the few remaining original 914-6's are the new Speedsters in value.

Hi Joe, I have to run to a meeting so here is a quick response� The 72� Porsche 914-6 cars were in fact built at the VW assembly line among the many other 914-4 car chassis, NOT by Porsche. Not many 72� 914-6 cars were built, this was due to the already dwindling popularity and demand for the 1970-71 Porsche 914-6 cars as they competed with the 911 in price and performance (at that time the price difference between the two models was approx. $500). The few 72' Porsche 914-6 cars that were built by the VW factory, those were essentially converted from 914-4 cars to 914-6 while moving along the VW assembly line, the modifications done to most of the current 914-4 cars today to convert them to a 914-6, are basically the very same modifications done at the VW factory (six cylinder engines installed, a different engine wiring harness, the external oil-tank, suspension, etc.). The 914-6 purest does not consider a 72� Porsche 914-6 a �true� Porsche factory built 914-6 car, but rather, a basterized version of the 1970 and 1971 Porsche 914-6 factory built cars. If I was going to buy a 914-6 for its value, it would be a 70� or 71� Porsche factory built car and certainly not a 72� model year� The value of a 72� 914-6 should be lower than the earlier six cylinder cars, and buyers that are not aware of these differences, will more likely overpay for a 72� 914-6, unfortunately. So there you have it, maybe my comments are not fair, but it is what it is. Hope this helps... Armando
