Porsche 914-6 GT Lubrication / Cooling System

The lubrication system of a 914-6 GT is rather complex, it was originally designed for endurance racing applications and certainly nothing one would normally find in a street car. There are several key components that make up the 914-6 GT lubrication system; a large oil filler neck https://pbase.com/9146gt/9146_gt_oil_filler_neck_original_nos an oil thermostat with its incorporated mounting tab https://pbase.com/9146gt/gt_oil_thermostat an oil pressure relief valve https://pbase.com/9146gt/oil_pressure_relief_valve an oil filter console https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/32227618 and mounting spacer https://pbase.com/9146gt/oil_filter_console_spacer all these oil lines https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22320662 and lastly an oil overflow reservoir https://pbase.com/9146gt/oil_overflow_bottle_bracket

Please note that in this section I did not include the rest of the lubrication system components, starting with; the 914-6 external oil tank, the pair of long brass oil lines https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22228040 the front mounted oil cooler and supporting steel shrouding/covers. For now, you can find some photo references here https://pbase.com/9146gt/gt_oil_lines_front_cooler_to_brass_lines but my plan is to later come back and completly revise the section.

Incidentally, if by chance you're wondering what it would cost to correctly implement a 914-6 GT front oil cooler installation with all the required system components, the fabrication labor and 914-6 GT parts, the price tag is estimated to be in the area of $16,000 to $18,000 dollars based on past experience. This price takes into account using mostly 'excellent reproduction GT parts', not originals. If your plan includes the use of the factory OEM 914-6 GT parts, then all bets are off and plan on adding another 6K-8K to your 914-6 GT conversion budget. This could be a moot point since most, if not all OEM 914-6 GT parts for the lubrication system have been NLA for years. The handful of sources I know that 'may' have some of these pieces, for the most part, are unwilling to sell.

After reading these comments, you may be discouraged and for good reason. The next time you're contemplating a 914-6 GT Front Oil Cooler installation, you'll probably think about it twice. I thought about it several times myself, but many years ago, and still do as I shake my head in disbelief I was actually able to find all the required 'NOS' 914-6 GT factory pieces to complete the system. With two decades of searching, sourcing, pleading and funding the purchase of all these very rare 914-6 GT parts, today I consider myself extremely fortunate.
