The Daytona Winning Porsche 914-6 GT - sn 914.043.1017

Springing from their racing experience, Porsche had long had a desire to build a mid-engine street car. Within the framework of their cooperative contract with Volkswagen AG, the Type 914 came to life. Introduced at the Frankfort Auto Show in September 1969, both the 914/4 with VW motor and the 914/6 with a 911T six-cylinder carburated motor went to market.

The street car 914/6 never caught on, in part because it looked like its less expensive little brother while being priced close to 911's (The few who knew it did love it.) Even less well known were the 914-6 GT's.

The 914/6 GT was homologated via a loophole through which Porsche marketed GT conversion kits for 914/6's. The factory built 10 or 11 for their use and for a few friends, and sold kits to anyone who wanted one. The GT had its great moments in the track; 1st-2nd-3rd in the 86-Hour Marathon de la Route at Nurburgring; 6th overall and 1st in the GT Class at the 1970 Le Mans; and 3rd place in the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally.

This car is a factory-built GT and is famous for its 1971 Daytona run where it finished 1st in class and 7th overall in the hands of its owner Jacques Duval assisted by Bob Bailey and George Nicholas. The car finished 3rd in class at Sebring and won at Canada's Carnival at Three Rivers. Is has been restored for vintage racing to its exact 1971 Daytona appearance by its current owner.
