With encouragement from the "Old Dawgs" in the Thailand Dog Handlers, the Leatherman Tool Group of Portland, Oregon, has just donated a bunch of the company's heavy-duty Leatherman Surge multi-tools to our "Pups," K-9 handlers at Ali Air Base, Kirkuk Air Base, and Forward Operating Base Warrior in Iraq. The Old Dawgs suggested the Surge for this donation because it's big and extremely rugged; it's a 4.5" multi-tool with more than 20 useful features including two locking knife blades that can be opened with one hand (perfect for use when your other hand is leashed to a big dog). The Surge's other features include several screwdrivers, wire cutters, pliers, a saw, files, and scissors.

The tools were delivered to Iraq in mid-February, and the handlers are very pleased with the gifts. They've told us how they might use the tools, as well as how much they appreciate the support from home.

The Thailand Dog Handlers members are former U.S. Air Force dog handlers. We are veterans of the Vietnam War and members of the Vietnam Dog Handlers Association and Vietnam Security Police Association. Since the beginning of American military deployments to Iraq we have been active in sourcing supplies for the dog handlers and coordinating shipments.
