We spent our final full day of this trip at the historic Fort Jefferson on Garden Key of the Dry Tortugas, 68-mi. west of Key West. Construction began on this fort in 1834 and it was occupied by Union Soldiers in 1861. The nearby keys are the only known nesting sites in the U.S. for such seabirds as the Sooty Tern and the Brown Noddy. I would love to return in April during the height of migration as over 300 species of birds have been spotted from Garden Key!
