Guide

These monthly US classic Style' calendar templates are an easy way to create very cheap (for the cost of 12 sheets of photo paper) yet attractive personal calendars. These particular templates are design for producing 11" x 17" calendars but they can be easily modified to be used with other paper sizes. They are of sufficient resolution to use in prints as large as 20" x 30" and are designed to hold an image of approximately 2700 pixels wide by 3600 pixels high. First download the required images to your hard drive. The file name should end .gif for the gif versions and .jpg for the jpg versions. Please note that a PROBLEM occurs with certain browsers with the gif versions such as many versions of INTERNET EXPLORER, which can't display gif images of this size (in terms of pixel dimensions) so you may have to try a different browser to get the gif templates you want, Netscape 7.0 up and Firefox all work perfectly with gifs of this size. I have uploaded these templates in two formats jpg and gif. The JPEG (.jpg files) are the easiest to use and are the best for the novice or those with little free time and/or limited photographic software and are found towards the start of the gallery. The jpg files should allow simple image paste in and print. I have used GIF files for several reasons: 1. It's a loss less format so the quality may be a hint better. 2. It allows for transparent backgrounds so those who are more skilled in photo manipulation can overlay the template on top of an image of their choice. 3. The transparent background/masked text also makes some color changes more easily accomplished. For some strange reason the transparent background in the gif files has caused the thumbnails to be artifactually displayed as negatives, the original images have white backgrounds. For those who prefer .jpg files these files can be found on page 2 of the gallery. Alternatively the gif files can be easily converted to .jpgs (the gif files are much smaller and download faster). Simply open the file using some quality image-manipulation software, such as PhotoShop or Corel PhotoPaint etc, then save the files as a .jpg file, then paste in your resized favorite image (non-copyrighted ie your own, or an image you have permission to use) position it over the guide line and save the resulting file. These templates are designed to hold an image of 2700 pixels wide x 3600 pixels high (9" x 12" at the designed size of 11" x 17" at 300 pixels per inch). An image of this size exactly covers the guide lines (If you use an image of a different size or multiple images remember to remove any guide lines that may not be covered so they don't ruin your calendar). I recommend first producing your 12 images at the appropriate size all at 300 dpi. Note in some programs if you paste in your images into the original .gif files (only 256 colors), without first converting the file to a .jpg or changing the colors to RGB (24 bit) color, your images may be converted to 256 colors producing a poor quality image. These templates are 16.8 MP each (3300 x 5100 pixels 300 dpi) so should print out extremely well at their designed size of 11" x 17". Despite the fact that these gif files were exported at 300 dpi they open in many programs at 72 dpi, to ensure these images print at their designed size you may have to resize the image from 72 dpi back to 300 dpi. To do this resize your image maintaining the original pixel image size (to do this in PhotoShop you remove the check from the resample box, in Corel PhotoPaint you check the maintain original size box) and increase the dpi 72 from 300. If you change the dpi to 390 instead, the calendar will be approximately 8.5" x 13.1" and suitable for printing on 8.5" x 14" paper. If you change the dpi to 170 the calendar will be approximately 19.5" x 30" and suitable for printing on 20" x 30" paper. The longer aspect ratio of these templates makes them unsuitable for 8.5" x 11" paper without modification. Remember to print the image centered on the page, or towards the bottom if you desire more space for binding, if the software does not do this by default. I recommend using the best photographic quality paper available, and a printer capable of at least 1200 dpi, and always check print preview before potentially wasting a bunch of ink a few sheets of expensive photopaper (a trial print on regular paper in draft mode is often a good idea). The example files are only low resolution and not suitable for printing and were merely produced to illustrate the use of these calendar templates.
