These CD case calendar templates are an easy way to create very cheap (for the cost of 6/7 sheets of photo paper depending if you use the optional cover and a CD case) yet attractive personal calendars quickly. I have uploaded these templates available in two formats jpg and gif. I have used GIF files for several reasons: 1. It's a loss less format so the quality may be a hint better. 2. It allows for transparent backgrounds so those who are more skilled in photo manipulation can overlay the template on top of an image of their choice as shown in the cover example. 3. The transparent background/masked text also makes some color changes more easily accomplished. For some strange reason this has caused the thumbnails only to be artifactually displayed as negatives, the original images have white backgrounds. Despite the fact that these gif files were exported at 300 dpi they open in many programs at 72 dpi, to ensure these images print at their designed size you may have to resize the image from 72 dpi back to 300 dpi. To do this resize your image maintaining the original pixel image size (to do this in PhotoShop you remove the check from the resample box, in Corel PhotoPaint you check the maintain original size box) and increase the dpi 72 from 300. This will produce an image of exactly 8.0" x 10". For those who prefer .jpg files these files can be found on page 2 of the gallery. The GIF files can also be easily converted to .jpgs. Simply open the file using some quality image-manipulation software, such as PhotoShop or Corel PhotoPaint etc, ensure the file is the correct size (3000 x 2400 pixels 300 dpi) as described above, then save the files as a .jpg file. Paste in your resized favorite image (non-copyrighted ie your own, or an image you have permission to use) position it over the guide line and save the resulting file. I recommend first producing your 12 images at the appropriate size ie cropped/resized to 1200 pixels wide x 800 pixels high at 300 dpi (this size will exactly cover the guide lines) before pasting in your images. If you use the optional cover/back pages you will also need to produce 12 thumbnail sized (300 x 200 pixels 300dpi) versions of these images. Note in some programs if you paste in your images into the original .gif files (only 256 colors), without first converting the file to a .jpg, your images may be converted to 256 colors producing a poor quality image. These templates are 7.2 MP each so should print out extremely well at their designed size of 8" x 10". They are all 300 dpi and are designed to be printed on 8.5" x 11" photopaper. They can of course be uploaded to an online photo services such as Ofoto. If you do upload your files, choose 8" x 10" as the desired print size and remove the check mark from the zoom and trim box, so your prints will maintain the correct dimensions. If you print using your own printer, I recommend using the best photographic quality paper available, and a printer capable of at least 1200 dpi. Naturally, you can use less than this, but the quality of the final print will suffer. Not all CD cases are suitable for this project. They should be of clear, non-slim line style and have a removable CD tray, which is removed and discarded. Not all brands are identical and equally suited to this purpose so it may be worth examining several brands. Recently it has come to my attention that CD cases are now available that are specifically designed for calendar use, some of these have a built in stand such as those available from
www.calendar-case.com so these would definitely be worth looking into. However, most CD cases can be made to function as a stand (see gallery). Furthermore cheap plate stands work very well as CD case calendar holders and these have the added advantage, over using the case as a stand, in that they protect your calendar from light fade (see gallery). When the templates are printed the calendar pages (2 per sheet) should be carefully cut out (I'm not responsible for your personal injuries). You can cut directly along the guide lines or just a fraction inside if you wish to avoid the line on your finished product. They should then be of the correct dimensions if the images have not been resized in anyway. The calendar templates are given in two formats UK/European (week runs Monday to Sunday) and US format (week runs Sunday to Saturday). The example files are only low resolution and not suitable for printing and were merely produced to illustrate the calendar.
