This is a collection of shots from our walks down by a local fast flowing river mostly taken in mid January on well below freezing. On such days I generally have to keep the camera warm inside my jacket as it was starting to focus very slowly due to the cold....nevertheless the camera has always done a fine job despite the cold and the photos of the interesting ice formations are worth the effort.
I'm not sure what conditions cause this effect (possibly a change in wind direction) but a few of the icicles exhibited abrupt direction changes... very strange normally they grow straight downwards!!!
The strange ice formations along the edge of the river are particularly interesting and beautiful and they appear to be able to form on just about anything including a discarded piece of fishing line. Hope you enjoy the walk with us along the river from the warmth of your room.
