Hundreds of excited family members received one of the best holiday gifts when their loved ones, members of the 202nd Military Police Company, returned home safely.
As the sun started to rise over Anderson Field House Dec. 23, family members also rose to their feet when they saw the troops come home, after a year-long deployment to Afghanistan.
“The worst thing about the last year is that I missed my son,” Mary Anderson of Detroit said of 1st Sgt. Joseph Anderson. “The best thing about today is that I get to see him,” she said, as anxious energy seemed to fill the field house before the company’s arrival.
Bob Bird of Poca, W.V, and his 5-year-old grandson, Elijah Queen, came a night early to see their son and uncle, Spec. Jason Bird arrive.
“This is a wonderful Christmas gift for everybody,” said Col. Larry Jameson, 8th Brigade commander.
“We saved lives in Kandahar and Bagram, Afghanistan, under difficult conditions,” he said.
Capt. Bill Neal, 202nd company commander, welcomed his Soldiers home. “Less than 10 months after activation, these Soldiers had their first deployment. The Soldiers, all of them, did an outstanding job, even when a facility was shut and they had to transfer detainees.”
Spc. Russell Apperson was reunited with his family and with his dog, Max. He said, “I plan to relax a bit and spend time with my family and wife.”
