Looks to me as if there was once an addition attached to the back of the church. You can still make out its roof line. The chimney probably served wood or coal burning stoves on both sides. The church itself seems quite sad, so I'm glad to see the bit of pink-blooming tree peeking out from the background on the left.
I once passed the opportunity to buy a small church that had lost it's congregation to the suburbs. It was on a street now filled with houses in an urban setting. Would have made a great domicile but of course, at the time I had no money. Come to think of it, I still have no money.
