Sie enthalten anticholinergen Alkaloide Hyoscyamin und Scopolamin, weshalb sie als delirante Halluzinogene wirken.
Engelstrompeten sind sehr leicht beschaffbar, werden aber wegen ihrer kaum kontrollierbaren Wirkung und schlechten Dosierbarkeit verhältnismäßig selten als Droge benutzt. Sie wird auch als "Baum-Datura" bezeichnet.
