Chiang Mai is Thailand's second largest city, and it is completely different to Bangkok. Life in Chiang Mai is more quiet, the architecture (at least in the suburbs) is still very much in the traditional Thai style and the weather is not as hot and the athmospheric moisture not as high as in the capital.

Chiang Mai is a prominent starting point for trekking tours into the nearby mountains, visits of the "hilltribe area" and excursions into the "Golden Triangle". The most prominent sights in the city are the nightmarket and several most interesting temples. An absolute "must" is the visit of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, about 15km outside Chiang Mai. There are also several handicraft centers in and around the city.
