Wildlife images taken during a 4 day trip to mauritius october 2007. Some of the birds were taken on the mainland and some on ile aux aigrettes, a nature reserve. Some of the birds in this gallery are very rare and are endangered. The nature reserve is located in south east mauritius. Formed when the sea level dropped by 800M, creating a coral island that can be 4 degrees hotter than the mainland. During this small islands occupation its natural forests were cut down to fuel the kiln to make quick lime. The ebony trees present were also cut to produce furniture, piano keys and other decorative objects. The work of the mauritian wildlife foundation is to sustain and increase the populations of endemic species and to restore the natural habitat of the island (mainland mauritius) and the islets that surrond mauritius.
